Clarion Collection Hotel Bilan lies in a tranquil area, close to Karlstad's central shopping district. Just a short walk will take you to Stora Torget and its nearby shops and restaurants. Karlstad's biggest attractions aren't far away at all, Karlstad CCC (Congress Culture Centre), Nojesfabriken (entertainment centre), and the beautiful Inre Hamn.
From county prison to hotel
Clarion Collection Hotel Bilan has a long and exciting history. It was built in the mid-1800s, and was a prison until 1968. Several of Sweden's most notorious criminals have been incarcerated here, with Raskenstam as the most famous guest. Despite the metre-thick walls, there were quite a few escapes. The most common method is said to have been by use of the classic file and sheets tied together.
